The demand for a nationwide caste census has emerged as one of the most significant political and policy debates in contemporary India. While caste data for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) continues to be officially collected, comprehensive nationwide caste data beyond these categories has not been officially published since the 1931 Census. This has intensified calls for updated caste-based data to better reflect India’s
present social and economic realities.

 

Supporters argue that a caste census is essential for evidence-based policymaking, equitable welfare distribution, and assessing the effectiveness of reservation policies. They believe updated data can help address inequalities and improve targeted development initiatives. At the same time, concerns have been raised regarding social fragmentation, political polarization, administrative complexity, and the potential misuse of caste-based
data.
