Kurdish military groups play an important role in the Middle East. For instance, they include the peshmerga of Iraq and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria. In light of these developments, they have received international attention for their efficiency and resilience in combating ISIS. But this is subject to a whole range of intricate geopolitical web surrounding them which also involves Turkey as a powerful regional state that views them as threats to its national security and territorial integrity. Consequent tensions have turned into violent conflicts with Kurds until now. However, the US support has been fluctuating leading to uncertainty about their future, thus raising doubts whether they will be able to withstand aggression from Turkey or Assad’s regime while keeping alive their self-determination spirit. The situation is fluid hence Kurdish forces are confronted by numerous difficulties that may affect both regional stability and their struggle towards greater independence.
