Outer space has become an increasingly important domain for communication, navigation, weather forecasting, scientific research, and national security. As reliance on satellite infrastructure continues to grow, concerns have emerged regarding the development of military capabilities designed to operate in or target assets in space.
Among these concerns is the development and testing of Anti-Satellite (ASAT) weapons, which are capable of disrupting, damaging, or destroying satellites. Several states have demonstrated such capabilities, raising questions about the security of space-based infrastructure and the potential consequences of conflict extending beyond Earth's atmosphere. The testing of ASAT systems has also generated concerns regarding space
debris, which can threaten both civilian and military satellites.
Existing international agreements, including the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, provide a framework for the peaceful use of outer space. However, rapid technological advancements and evolving security considerations have led to renewed discussions regarding arms control, responsible state behavior, and the prevention of an arms race in
outer space.
Under this agenda, delegates will examine the challenges posed by the weaponization of outer space, assess the risks associated with ASAT weapons, and explore measures to promote transparency, cooperation, and the peaceful use of space.
